..F .......C
Molly and Sarah had no where to stay,
.....Dm ....Am
When Molly heard of the house.
..F .........C
She’d taken her daughter and run away,
.....Dm.............E
From the blows and the threats of her spouse.
..F .............C
The house was so close to the waterline,
......Dm.........Am
They were barely two pence from the shore.
..F................C
The old house had flooded many a time,
.....Dm ........E
But she’d never last one flood more.

Chorus:

And they were
C.....F........G
Two pence away from the shore,
...Dm......C......G
In an old worn out part of the town,
....F.......Am
And though they were poor,
......F.........C
They were sure they found home,
F.....G7......C
Two pence away from the shore.

The old lady landlord lived up the hill,
Above the reach of the river’s whim
She’d long ago given up repairing the place,
And the roof was starting to give in.
Every day Sarah scrubbed and Molly she scraped,
Bought paint with every spare cent.
They worked on that house and made it a home
And helped make up part of the rent.

Sarah struggled with schoolwork and doing repairs,
Molly worked at a bar and grill,
They snuggled together in their one small bed,
At night to keep out the chill.
Then flood warnings came, the rains came, too,
The river it started to rise,
The moved all they could to the upper floor,
Then decided they must improvise.

Molly found concrete to shore up the posts,
Filling sand bags they contrived,
With their sand wall around it, and love to brace it,
That house somehow survived.
Now flowers again grow by the back door,
The river is gentle once more.
Molly and Sarah now have a real home,
Only two pence away from the shore.
